2011 Senior Project Artist Statement

Examining Future’s Past

I have always been fascinated by mythology – the traditions, belief structures, and stories of ancient cultures. I am also intrigued by film and television’s use of ancient culture where it is blurred with modern or super science.

In this project I have referenced tomb and temple relief work from ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom period.  My pieces are a re-interpretation that blurs the boundaries between two different concepts; ancient culture and technology are blended together to form a unique series of tiles containing what appear to be mysterious messages from the past.

The “core” of what runs our modern society coupled with clay are used to create tiles that appear to be fragments of a larger whole.  I am exploring technology and its impact on our culture through this body of work as it reflects my thoughts regarding technology, society and religion.
